Rowynn Dumont

Rowynn Dumont is a conceptual artist, photographer and scholar. She currently attends The Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts, in pursuit of her P.h.D. in Philosophy, Aesthetics and Art Theory. She holds an MFA from the Academy of Art University San Francisco, in Photography and a BFA, in Studies of Taboo Religions and Sexuality in Art, from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Rowynn's work can be seen internationally, in Nimbus at Vespertine in Shanghai, China and The Fowler Museum, in Los Angeles, CA, amongst various other places.

How and when did you start creating art?

When I was 15 years old, my grandmother gave me her oil paints. I began to experiment with them and have been making art ever since.

What media and genres do you work in?

I am a multi-media artist. My main focus is alternative and antiquarian photographic processes. In addition I have extensive knowledge in print making, painting, sculpture and installation.

Who or what are your influences?

I am greatly influenced by Haitian Vodou Aesthetics, and European Decadence and Alchemy.

What was your inspiration for Quinta da Regaleira, Sintra, Lisboa, Portugal?

“Quinta da Regaleira, Sintra, Lisboa, Portugal” is a medium format photograph, utilizing a Czech twin lens Flexaret. The photo was taken of the chapel on the grounds of Quinta da Regaleira. The architecture and symbology which is prevalent on the estate holds references to Knights of the Templar, the Masons and alchemy.

Describe your creative process?

Depends on the medium. I like to make room for happy accidents, within the understanding of how the rules of chemistry work. It is all about the process.

What are you working on currently?

Everything in life, is a work in progress, always moving forward, developing and evolving. I have multiple series which I am currently involved with, in addition to finishing my dissertation for my P.h.D. in Aesthetics & Theory.

What are your near/long term goals as an artist?

Taking life one day at a time. My goal is to ever strive in improving my knowledge and understanding of my craft and the world around me. Learning to ask the right questions.
