Steve Jensen

Steve Jensen has been a working artist for over 45 years. His current body of work, “VOYAGER” are boats that are meant to symbolize a voyage or journey, perhaps it is the voyage to the other side, or the journey into the unknown. Steve comes from a long tradition of Scandinavian fisherman and boat builders. He grew up on and around his father and grandfather’s fishing boats in the Seattle shipyards.
Steve has has solo exhibitions in 30 museums or art centers including The Morris Graves Museum, 30 public art projects including The National Nordic Museum, and received 10 awards including The National Endowment for the Arts. His work was featured by Channel 9 “Art as Voyage” Steve Jensen’s Nordic Heritage and Amazon Prime, “The Story of Art in America” episode 10.
How and when did you start creating art?
I started as a child and won a national art award at age 12. Cannot recall the name of the award.

Who or what are your influences?
My background and my Scandinavian heritage.
What was your inspiration for
The Ice is Melting, Our Ship is Sinking series - Nordic Vessel - 12" x 24" x 10" cast glass boat, found bottle and melted ice from Antarctica

Describe your creative process?
I try as much as possible to use recycled or found materials.
What are you working on currently?
A piece for the Museum of NW Art. I am working with a marine biologist who specializes in salmon habitat. Our piece is focused on how one in one hundred salmon survive to reproduce
What are your near/long term goals as an artist?
To create more pieces about the environment. This series is called “The Ice is Melting, Our Ship is Sinking."
