Artist of the Month June 2024

Claire Sallenger Martin

North Carolina, USA

The magical creative world is where I belong.  The discipline of being a jewelry designer for 30 years transitioned easily to 2D. Acrylic, life drawing and experimental design interested me. Recently, digital imagery mixed with original art has been introversive. Descriptive imagery using humor, human form, rhythm, color and design are my voice in connecting with the viewer.

How and when did you start creating art?

MY CHILDHOOD WAS ONE CREATIVE JOURNEY.  I WAS IN “INTERPRETIVE DANCE” AS A YOUNG GIRL AND CREATED MY OWN ROUTINES. NOT UNTIL COLLEGE DID I BECOME INTERESTED IN ART AS A CREATIVE FORCE.  I WON A NATIONAL POSTER CONTEST AS A STUDENT. THE SUBJECT WAS A CHILD(ME) WITH MY DOLL MAKER GRANDMOTHER. FROM COLLEGE I ACCEPTED A JEWELRY DESIGNER POSITION WITH A SMALL CUSTOM JEWELRY SHOP.  THIS BEGAN MY CAREER OF CREATING FOR OTHERS. FOR MANY YEARS I CREATED FROM MY OWN STUDIO FINE CUSTOM ONE-OF-A-KIND PIECES OF JEWELRY. THE CURRENT SEGMENT OF MY JOURNEY IS IN NORTH CAROLINA AS A 2D ARTIST. A FAMOUS AMERICAN ARTIST THAT I STUDIED UNDER ASKED ME…”HAS ANYONE EVER TOLD YOU THAT YOU ARE UNIQUE?” I ANSWERED: “EVERYONE TELLS ME THAT”. I TELL YOU THIS BECAUSE I AM THANKFUL FOR THE CHILDHOOD FREEDOM OF CREATIVE PLAY THAT CAME MY WAY.

What media and genres do you work in?

ACRYLIC, WATERCOLOR, OIL AND COLLAGE

Who or what are your influences?

INTRICATE, DETAILED, SCULPTURES IN WAX FOR JEWELRY CASTING WAS MOST INFLUENCIAL. LIFE DRAWING WAS THE MOST EXPRESSIVE FORM OF 2D TRAINING.

What was your inspiration for

What's in Your Beach Bag?

?

THIS MIXED MEDIA CREATION WAS INSPIRED BY THE COMICAL VISITORS THAT VACATION AT THE ATLANTIC COASTLINE WHERE I LIVE. BEACH ANTICS ARE EXTRADINARY IN THAT EVERYONE IS HAVING, IN THEIR OWN WAY, UNINHIBITED FUN. THE BEACH BAG IS IN ITSELF. A TREASURE TROVE FOR THIS ACTIVITY. FUNNY THING THAT I NOTICED WHEN I WAS DRAWING THEM, THEY STOPPED TO WATCH ME.

Describe your creative process?

DRAWING, TRANSFERRING THE FINISHED DESIGN TO THE SUPPORT FOR THE MEDIA.

What are you working on currently?

ABSTRACTS USING THE THEME OF MONETARY IMAGES WITH A PALETTE OF METALS COLOR.

What are your near/long term goals as an artist?

COMPETITION IN REGIONAL ART SHOWS. INTERNET SALES.

Where can people view/purchase your work (gallery, website, etc)?
