Artist of the Month August 2018

Cheryl Gross

Jersey City, NJ

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Cheryl Gross is an illustrator, painter, and motion graphic artist living and working in the New York/Jersey City area. She is a professor at Pratt Institute and Bloomfield College.

How and when did you start creating art?

I was always an artist. I’ve been creating art ever since I can remember.

What media and genres do you work in?

Watercolor, gouache, acrylic, India ink, ballpoint, graphite, color pencils, coffee on paper.

Who or what are your influences?

Walton Ford, Henry Darger.

What was your inspiration for Lady in Red?

I was on the Path train traveling into Manhattan. There was this woman standing there and the composition was perfect.

Describe your creative process?

I start with preparing the background. I then sketch out my idea and transfer it onto the paper. I design, add color, erase until I’m satisfied with the result. I incorporate a narrative, which allows every painting to tell a story.

What are you working on currently?

A series titled: “My Very Existence, My Life In The World, Seemed Like A Hallucination.” Quote by, Haruki Murakami. The narrative is socially and politically based, even if it’s subtle.

What are your near/long term goals as an artist?

I plan on continuing to show my work and eventually get into an established gallery here in NY.

Where can people view/purchase your work (gallery, website, etc)?
