Artist of the Month July 2016

Patricia Henderson

Wallaceburg, Ontario, Canada

Patricia Henderson is an accomplished collage and mixed media artist from Wallaceburg, Ontario,
Canada and the great grandniece of renowned Canadian Landscape artist Homer Watson. Henderson’s
work features the diversity of rural animals and birds of Chatham-Kent. Henderson has worked with
watercolour artist Margaret Roseman, and contemporary artist and author Mary Todd Beam.
Henderson’s work is inspired by the rich textural collage work of Elizabeth St. Hilaire.
In 2002, Henderson began painting with watercolours. Her artwork evolved in a new direction when she
discovered collage art, or ‘paper paintings’, in 2009. Her first experiment with tearing up and gluing
pieces of failed watercolours led to a love of this jigsaw collage of text, colour, paper, paint and natural
subjects. Each piece is a multi-layered story. Henderson’s studio is at home in Wallaceburg, Ontario, and
she is an exhibiting member at Art Space Gallery in Chatham, Ontario.

How and when did you start creating art?

I started relatively late in my art journey when I was around 45 and decided to take a beginners watercolor class. That was back in 2002.

What media and genres do you work in?

Currently I mainly work in Torn Paper Collage and Mixed Media, but I try to practice watercolor as often as I can, as it was my first love in art!

Who or what are your influences?

I'm influenced by the natural world around me, and the change of seasons.  Local wildlife is a  theme that I return to often. I am inspired by many other artists, but Elizabeth St. Hilaire is my favourite collage artist.

What was your inspiration for  "Are You Lookin' at Me?" ~ Collage on Canvas ?

I've always been fascinated by crows. They are such intelligent birds, and beautiful in their own
way with their black, glossy feathers. However,  in our municipality, crows gather in the hundreds
of thousands and cause havoc and frustration to property owners nearby. They have a pretty bad
reputation around here. So,in this piece I wanted to show the beauty of the crow, and also a bit of
personality and attitude.

Describe your creative process?

I utilize hand-painted, found, and torn paper instead of paint to create my subject.  I use acrylic medium to adhere the paper to a stretched canvas. My process sometimes feels like a jigsaw puzzle where I’m looking for just the right piece. I like to incorporate ords and snippets of stories, poems, and other text into my pieces that tie in with the subject. t’s fun to take a close look to see what you can find!

What are you working on currently?

Right now, I'm working on a very summery piece inspired my my back yard. The subject is hummingbirds at a feeder and many of my favorite flowers in my perennial garden.

What are your near/long term goals as an artist?

Well, I've recently retired from my day job as a Medical Laboratory Technician, so I have lots more time for art making. Basically my goal is to ust create art that I like and hope other do too. A bonus is if they want to purchase it!

Where can people view/purchase your work (gallery, website, etc)?

You can view my art on my website which is patriciahenderson.net  or they can go my Etsy shop at www.etsy.com/ca/shop/PatriciaHendersonAr. I am also a exhibiting member of ARTspace, a local art gallery in Chatham ON. You can find some of my work there.
