It’s an opportunity to step back from the day-to-day rhythm of making and ask where your work is actually going.

This isn’t about measuring productivity or checking boxes.

It’s about making sure your practice still reflects your curiosity, your growth, and the direction you want to move in before the busy fall exhibition and open call season arrives.

Here are six questions worth asking.

1. What Have I Actually Made This Year?

Not how many pieces.

Not how many hours.

Not how many social media posts.

What have you genuinely explored?

Sometimes the most important progress isn’t obvious until you look back. Maybe you’ve started working larger. Maybe you’ve introduced new materials. Perhaps a recurring shape, color, or idea has quietly found its way into multiple pieces without you realizing it.

Looking at your work collectively often reveals patterns that aren’t visible while you’re making it.

Lay everything out if you can. Open old folders. Spread prints across the floor. Flip through your sketchbooks.

Instead of asking whether the work is “good,” ask what it has been trying to teach you.

Very often, your next body of work is already hiding inside the last one.

2. Have I Properly Documented My Work?

Documentation has a way of becoming tomorrow’s problem.

Until an exhibition deadline appears.

Until someone asks for high-resolution images.

Until you realize the painting has already been sold and the only photograph you have was taken under warm kitchen lights.

Good documentation isn’t simply administrative. It’s part of your professional practice.

Take time to photograph recent work properly. Capture detailed images, installation views, and accurate color. Rename files clearly and organize them somewhere you’ll actually be able to find them six months from now.

If you’ve recently completed a new series, this is an ideal time to document everything while the work is still together.

Future you will be grateful.

🎨 RELATED READING: How to Photograph Your Artwork (So It Actually Gets Accepted)

3. Does My Portfolio Still Represent My Practice?

A portfolio isn’t a museum of everything you’ve ever created.

It’s a snapshot of where your practice is today.

As artists grow, portfolios often lag behind. Older work stays because it once won an award. Pieces remain because they’ve always been there. Newer work gets added without asking whether it actually belongs alongside everything else.

Take a fresh look.

If someone saw your portfolio today, would they understand what you’re exploring now?

Or would they be looking at work made by a different version of you?

Editing isn’t about proving you’ve been productive.

It’s about presenting your strongest, clearest ideas.

Sometimes removing one image strengthens the entire portfolio.

🎨 RELATED READING: Your Portfolio Matters More Than Ever

4. Can I Still Explain What I’m Making?

Artist statements aren’t meant to be written once and forgotten.

As your work changes, your language should change with it.

Read your current statement.

Does it still sound like you?

Does it describe the work you’re making today, or the work you were making four years ago?

If the words feel disconnected, don’t start from scratch immediately.

Instead, return to your notes.

Sketchbooks.

Studio journals.

Voice memos.

Half-written captions.

You’ll often discover that you’ve already been writing your next artist statement without realizing it.

The language usually exists long before the formal document does.

🎨 RELATED READING: Why Artists Have Always Kept Notes (And Why You Should Too)

5. Where Do I Want This Work to Go?

Making work is only part of building an artistic practice.

The other half is finding the right audience for it.

Mid-year is an excellent time to think intentionally about opportunities rather than waiting until deadlines pile up in the fall.

Instead of applying everywhere, ask yourself:

Would this residency genuinely support my process?

Does this exhibition align with the work I’m making now?

Is this opportunity helping me move toward the kind of practice I want to build?

The strongest submissions often come from artists who have chosen opportunities thoughtfully.

Planning ahead also gives you time to strengthen your portfolio, update your documentation, and refine your artist statement before applications become urgent.

Preparation almost always produces stronger submissions than panic.

6. What Have I Given Up On Too Soon?

This might be the most important question of all.

Every artist has unfinished work.

The painting turned toward the wall.

The abandoned photographs.

The print that never quite worked.

The sketchbook filled with ideas that seemed impossible six months ago.

Not every experiment deserves another chance.

But some do.

Time has a way of changing our perspective. Work that once felt unresolved may suddenly reveal exactly where it wanted to go. An idea that seemed unsuccessful might simply have arrived before you were ready for it.

Art history is full of artists who returned repeatedly to the same questions throughout their careers.

Growth rarely happens by constantly searching for something completely new.

More often, it comes from staying with an idea long enough to truly understand it.

Sometimes the next breakthrough isn’t ahead of you.

It’s already waiting in the studio.

Looking Ahead

The middle of the year isn’t a finish line.

It’s a vantage point.

A chance to look back honestly, notice what’s changed, and decide where your energy belongs for the months ahead.

Strong artistic practices aren’t built through constant acceleration. They’re built through cycles of making, reflecting, editing, documenting, and sharing.

Taking a little time now to strengthen those foundations can make the next exhibition, residency, or open call feel far less overwhelming.

Ready for What’s Next?

Whether you’re refining your portfolio, documenting a new body of work, or preparing your next submission, TheArtList is here to support your journey.

Explore curated open calls, exhibitions, grants, and residencies that align with your practice.

Join our mailing list to receive new opportunities delivered directly to your inbox, and enter our Artist of the Month competition to share your work with a wider audience.

The strongest submissions rarely come together the night before a deadline.

They’re built steadily, one thoughtful decision at a time.

And there’s no better time to begin than the middle of the year.

A Mid-Year Check-In for Your Creative Practice By the time summer arrives, many artists find themselves in one of two places.
