Learn How to Describe Your Work With These 10 Questions

“So, what kind of art do you make?” As an artist, you’ve probably been asked this question more times than you can count. Whether an acquaintance has casually asked you about your work at a dinner party, or a curious collector at a gallery event, being able to effectively describe your work is an essential part of your successful career as an artist. Identifying the unique characteristics of your work can also help empower your future creative choices and decisions, give direction to your artistic vision, and help you prepare professionally for the expectations of the art world. Below, you’ll find ten questions that will help you describe your work.

The Importance of Describing Your Art

Learning how to identify your artwork effectively can help you sell pieces to interested buyers, submit work to a gallery for an exhibit, or when you’re giving a guest lecture. This essential skill will also aid you in writing numerous documents you’ll need as your career progresses. Here are just a few examples:

  • Your artist statement

It’s Time to Reflect

Rather than typing your answers on your computer, grab some paper, your favorite writing utensil, and answer the questions below. Answer each question as honestly as possible, and be truthful to yourself. Remember, this exercise is not an elevator pitch. There are no right or wrong answers. There is no character limit; your answers can be as short or long as they need to be. Take as much time as you need with each reflection. Above all, keep in mind that your answers don’t need to be perfect or polished by any means; this exercise is for you and you alone (unless, of course, you decide to share it). Try to enjoy the journey of this creative exercise.
