Opportunities for Artists

How Do I Prepare for An Art Call?

So you’ve decided to submit your artwork to an art call. How exciting! But now what? Well, preparation is key when it comes to increasing your chances of being accepted. Every call for entry has its own rules and guidelines, and it’s important to ensure your submission is complete and meets all the requirements. Some calls are short and sweet, asking for work in one medium only, such as drawing or photography; others may have specific themes or are presented online. Keep reading for tips to help you prepare for your next art call.

Step 1: Do Your Research

The first step in preparing for an art call is to do your research. There are many different types of art and photo calls out there, so you want to make sure you’re applying to ones that fit your interests and artistic practice. Once you’ve found a few calls that you’re interested in, take the time to read through the guidelines carefully. Make sure to pay attention to factors like eligibility requirements, deadlines, application fees, and what type of work they’re looking for. This will help you narrow down your options and choose the right opportunity. Then you can start tailoring your application to meet their specific requirements.

Step 2: Prepare Your Materials

The next step is to prepare your materials. This will vary depending on the type of call you’re applying to, but in general, you’ll want to have high-quality images of your work as well as a CV or artist statement handy. If the call requires specific materials like sketches or proposals, make sure you have those ready to go as well.

Step 3: Follow the Guidelines

This may seem like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many people try to submit work that doesn’t meet the basic requirements. Some calls are very particular in what they expect (for example, specific file names or sizes.) Remember that your work could be automatically rejected if the guidelines are ignored, so take the time to read them carefully and ensure you understand them before starting your application.

Step 4: Choose the Right Piece

When applying to an art call, choosing the right piece of work to submit is essential. This means considering both the theme of the call and the type of work they’re looking for. Make sure your piece aligns with the call. By choosing the right work, you’ll increase your chances of being selected and also make sure that your art is seen in the best light possible.

Step 5: Apply Early

Once you’ve researched and gathered all the necessary materials, it’s time to apply! But don’t wait until the deadline to submit your application—apply early if you can. This will give you extra time in case there are any problems with your application or if you need to make any revisions. It also shows that you’re organized and serious about the opportunity.

It’s also important to note that when it comes time to submit your work, ensure you’re sending in your best possible version. This means editing and proofreading any accompanying text (such as artist statements), ensuring that images are high quality and properly formatted and that all required materials are included with your submission. Taking care of your submission will make a good impression on the organizers and increase your chances of being selected.
